Neurophysiology tests

Evaluation of the function of the neuromuscular system

Neurophysiology tests

At the Brain Health Institute, electrodiagnostic tests (neurophysiological testing or electroneuromyography) are performed that are used in the investigation of a variety of neurological diseases such as:

  • Entrapment neuropathies (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar neuropathy) Entrapment neuropathies (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar neuropathy)
  • Polyneuropathies, acquired (e.g. diabetic or alcoholic polyneuropathy, Guillain–Barré syndrome), and hereditary (e.g. Charcot-Marie-Tooth) Polyneuropathies, acquired (e.g. diabetic or alcoholic polyneuropathy, Guillain–Barré syndrome), and hereditary (e.g. Charcot-Marie-Tooth)
  • Radiculopathies (due to pressure on the nerve roots from projections of the intervertebral discs) and Plexopathies (e.g. thoracic outlet syndrome) Radiculopathies (due to pressure on the nerve roots from projections of the intervertebral discs) and Plexopathies (e.g. thoracic outlet syndrome)
  • Motor neuron disorders (e.g. PLS, HSP, SMA, PMA, ALS, paraneoplastic diseases) Motor neuron disorders (e.g. PLS, HSP, SMA, PMA, ALS, paraneoplastic diseases)
  • Neuromuscular junction disorders (e.g. Myasthenia Gravis, Lambert Eaton syndrome) Neuromuscular junction disorders (e.g. Myasthenia Gravis, Lambert Eaton syndrome)
  • Myopathies (e.g. muscular dystrophies, congenital myopathies, mitochondrial myopathies, myotonic disorders, inflammatory myopathies) Myopathies (e.g. muscular dystrophies, congenital myopathies, mitochondrial myopathies, myotonic disorders, inflammatory myopathies)
  • Demyelinating diseases (e.g. Multiple Sclerosis) Demyelinating diseases (e.g. Multiple Sclerosis)
  • Optic tract evaluation (e.g. optic neuritis and other optic nerve lesion) Optic tract evaluation (e.g. optic neuritis and other optic nerve lesion)
  • Autonomic nervous system disorders (e.g. Diabetic Autonomic Neuropathy, Multiple Sclerosis, MSA) Autonomic nervous system disorders (e.g. Diabetic Autonomic Neuropathy, Multiple Sclerosis, MSA)

These diagnostic tests include:

  • Needle electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) Needle electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS)
  • F-waves and H-waves F-waves and H-waves
  • Repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) Repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS)
  • Blink reflex Blink reflex
  • Single fiber electromyography (SF-EMG) Single fiber electromyography (SF-EMG)
  • Sympathetic Skin Response (SSR) Sympathetic Skin Response (SSR)
  • Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) Visual evoked potentials (VEPs)
  • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Neurophysiological testing provides vital information about the functioning of the nervous system, contributing to the diagnosis of various neurological diseases. Valid diagnosis allows us to develop accurate and personalized treatment plans and monitor the effectiveness of interventions over time.
